Those unfamiliar with the original may shrug off this remake of Evil Dead as a sub-par Cabin in the Woods knockoff. Unfortunately, they'd be right. Over thirty years since the original, director Fede Alvarez updates the classic tale of five young adults travelling to an isolated cabin who awake a demonic presence. Some of Sam Raimi's trademark shots and story beats are lovingly recreated, but we've already seen them in a better film. Not until the last twenty minutes does this new Evil Dead reach the giddy, gory madness the original aspired for. Star Jane Levy is actually quite up for the challenge to lead this irony-free franchise, taking the punishment with a maniacal insanity. Her cast mates barely register a screen presence though, proving how cherished of a jewel Bruce Campbell truly is. Raimi's Evil Dead was an oppressive onslaught of terror, but this remake is structurally closer to your standard teen slasher flick, making it all the more forgettable. —Jacob Boon
