Everything Under the Sun

David Suzuki’s latest book explores everything from climate change conspiracy, the economy’s impact on the environment and society’s dependence on oil. Everything Under the Sun is collection of essays and newspaper columns Suzuki published in recent years. This format makes the book an easy read, and Suzuki doesn’t fill the pages with too much scientific jargon; he simplifies complex issues with precision in a tone both hopeful and cynical. Suzuki’s fascination with the economy’s effect on the environment led him on a fall tour of Western Canada with economist Jeff Rubin. Suzuki has also seen a backlash from economists across Canada on his views: “Is the Economy...Stupid?” is the title of one of the chapters in Everything Under the Sun. “You can’t have an economy that can grow forever,” says Suzuki, 76, via telephone from Vancouver. “The idea that we can have economic growth forever is suicidal. It’s impossible.”
