Emm Gryner

Torrential (independent)

Gryner seems to be appreciated more by fellow artists than the masses. Broader acclaim can never be ruled out if she keeps making albums like this. Her vocal range is uniquely fluid. The band and songs accentuate this asset most vividly. Opener “Pioneer” is so exuberant and concise it belongs on the radio as an eye-opening ear worm. Gryner could be accused of stuntcasting, with Chris Hadfield helping out on “So Easy,” but the singing spaceman acquits himself well. The breakup song “Sundown On Us” gets painfully specific. A lasting impression, however, is of a breakout record suitable for a summer-long singalong.
