As broad a path as Elvis Costello has blazed, he's never equalled his first three albums (My Aim is True, This Year's Model, Armed Forces) for grabbing your eardrums by the collar and shaking them. A few tunes on Momofuku enter that realm. They fuse current fears ("No Hiding Place") and "resident anger" ("American Gangster Time") with hot hooks and the snarly organ of Steve Nieve, renewing 30 years of fury. Casually acidic character sketches and a reflection on the fate of women ("My Name is Eve") vary the pace. Still, that menacing swirl always was the perfect counter to Costello's voice in aggressive nerd mode.
