Don’t pay the ferryman

To the editor,

I'm very upset with the fact that the Halifax Regional Municipality is contemplating a third ferry. I think that money should go to improve the current transit system for all HRM and not just to serve mostly Bedford residents.

It's ridiculous that residents in Timberlea, Tantallon and other areas like Herring Cove, Fall River, Eastern Passage, Musquodoboit Harbour and Porters Lake get bus service maybe once every hour, and it takes more than two hours to go to a major centre when it's not a peak time. Some individuals in the HRM don't have access to a Metro Transit bus, yet Bedford needs a ferry? Frankly, if you don't live on routes 1, 7 or 10, taking public transit in Halifax is not convenient. I do believe that more people would use the transit service in the outlying areas if it was more feasible.

Instead of less service to outlying areas, let's have more service—not just at peak times—and better service, so more people can use the system.

Survey Asks

Should council use the yet-to-be-finalized Centre Plan when debating new developments?

  • No, it doesn’t exist yet and is still likely to change
  • Yes, thousands of hours of work and consultation have gone into what’s already assembled
  • Maybe, it really depends on what’s being proposed by the developer
  • I don’t know what the Centre Plan is and do not wish to participate in this poll
