Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark lighter than it should be

Evil fairies and spooky house movie not so scary

Horror fans, beware: Troy Nixley’s re-invention of the 1973 TV movie won’t have you burrowing your face in the shoulder the person next to you. Little Sally (Bailee Madison), is sent to live with her dad (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend (Katie Holmes), architectural conservationists, in their current project, a spooky mansion in Rhode Island. A dimly lit back-story opens the movie, recounting how the house was abandoned after an artist and his son disappear. Presented and co-written by Guillermo del Toro, you expect a strong mythical touch a la Pan’s Labyrinth. What you get is del Toro light---a few whimsical garden scenes, gothic murals and demonic fairies on a mission to steal children. Madison’s version of a misunderstood kid on Adderall is convincing enough; unfortunately, Holmes acts too desperate and Pearce’s character is a dud.
