20 questions from The Coast

Meet the human behind the politician: We sent the candidates a questionnaire, asking questions that are more personal than political. Here are their unedited answers:

Coast analysis

Sitting councillors Debbie Hum and Russell Walker face off against each other, with John Thibeau, best known as one of the Occupiers at Grand Parade, as the outside challenger.

Update August 28: Debbie Hum, who represents the northern reaches of Clayton Park, announced she would not run for reelection.

In recent years Hum has more regularly challenged the secrecy and back-door deals at council. She voted against the convention centre deal, opposed the stadium and has increasingly established herself as an informed critic of the Kelly regime.

Hum tells us that, contrary to speculation elsewhere, she has no intention of running for provincial office, but she won’t rule out a return to municipal politics down the road. “I need a breather,” she says.

Had she run for newly downsized council, Hum would’ve faced sitting councillor Russell Walker and Occupy veteran John Thibeau. Hum pointedly declines to endorse any candidate, which amounts to a dis-endorsement of Walker.“

There are really big issues facing this area, and we need someone who can rise to the challenge,” she says, and mentions favourably a new candidate---Kurt Bulger, who works at Jennifer’s of Nova Scotia and is a board member of Credit Union Atlantic. Bulger announced his candidacy at nearly the exact moment Hum announced her non-candidacy.
