Diligent River Daughter

When: July 3-28 2013
Price: $28
I know it’s too early to pick my favourite plays for 2013, but I’ll be very surprised if Ship’s Company’s Diligent River Daughter doesn’t make the list. It’s a beautiful story (based on a novel by Bruce Graham), beautifully told (by director Ron Jenkins and playwright Scott Burke). Set in the time around the First World War, it centres on Charlene Durant (Kristen Slaney), a feisty young woman whose ambitions take her far from her rural Nova Scotian home. Slaney is luminescent in the demanding role that sees Charlene mature from an opinionated pre-teen to a woman working in a man’s world. The first act, set in the area around Parrsboro, sets the stage for a second act that’s almost cinematic in scope, ranging from Boston, to the battle fields of France to the Halifax Explosion. A theatrical journey you don’t want to miss. —Kate Watson
