Dean Wareham’s music over the last 20 years—in the influential Galaxie 500 and the consistently pleasing Luna—has always maintained a certain level of understated brilliance. So it is no surprise that his first disc post-Luna continues weaving similar threads he has skillfully cultured before, albeit with a nod to sultrier, sweeter melodic arrangements that recall a more sophisticated ’60s pop. That proves to be especially true on tracks like “White Horses” and a cover Lee Hazelwood’s “You Turned My Head Around.” Keeping things between himself and his wife/muse Britta Philips, Back Numbers at times comes across as love letters between them both.
