Day 8 at Magnetic North

Dance Marathon bliss

Dance Marathon: Created and Produced by bluemouth inc.

I'm an awkward dancer from way back. I was always the girl standing against the gym wall hyperventilating, equally fearful that no one would ask me to dance (loser!) or that someone would, exposing my inherent stiffness and rhythmic challenges (loser!). I'm not kidding when I say I was dreading Dance Marathon.

So, it is completely miraculous to me that I am here telling you that people of all ages and dancing abilities should grab their dancing shoes and boogie on down to The Olympic Centre to this fun, fun, fun show.

Dance Marathon is a clever combination of games, demonstrations, theatrical and musical moments and random elimination rounds. The event is suffused with an amazing feel-good communal spirit. Those who are eliminated doff their competitor pinnies and continue to dance the night away.

The flow of the evening is beautifully orchestrated. The audience is guided through it by a mistress of ceremonies and several other characters who bring comedy and drama to the show. Quiet moments are interspersed with manic dancing.

The genius of this show is that great dancers, average dancers and reluctant dancers come together to create a spectacle, an experience and a feeling.

Part way into the evening I realized I was loosening up. I wasn't just shuffling, I was dancing. So empowering!
