daVinci College

Have fun and help people as a Continuing Care Assistant.

Q&A with Angela Dolomont, a Certified Continuing Care Assistant for Northwood, Ivany Place

What pushed you to enroll in daVinci College’s CCA program?
I was ready for a change in my current work but wanted to continue working with the public. I saw an ad in the newspaper about daVinci College offering the CCA program so I attended their open house. Once I received more information on what the course offered, I signed up right away. I had a lot of respect for the caregivers who looked after many of my family members within a long-term care facility so I thought it would be a great fit for me to help others.

How was your experience?
I had a great experience within the program! My instructors were very knowledgeable while teaching the curriculum, I made some new friends along the way, and received a lot of hands-on experiences in-and-out of the classroom. After being out of school for almost 17 years, I really had to work hard to get back in the habit of studying. I enjoyed my clinical placement in Long-Term Care, Home Care and I had the opportunity to work within the hospital. The course prepared me for what I would soon be experiencing in the workforce.

How did your degree help you land your current career?
Northwood and daVinci College had partnered up and offered me a bursary through the CCA course—it worked out well because Northwood is where I wanted to be. The knowledge I learned throughout the course prepared me for my work placements, my CCA Provincial Exam and my work ethics to become a good CCA. I worked hard to get to where I am now.

What was your first day on the job like?
I had a great experience, but it was also a bit overwhelming being brand new. I learned that it’s OK to ask for help, and to ask a lot of questions to make sure I was comfortable and familiar with how daily routines and duties went. Each resident also had their own routine so it was important to read their care plans. It was a very busy first day!

What would you say to people looking to get into a career similar to yours?
It’s not for everyone—this can be a tough profession, mentally and physically. But it’s well worth it to know that you’ve helped put a smile on someone’s face.
