David Virelles Continuum

David Virelles plays it humble: “You hit the keys and the next thing you know, you’re taking piano lessons”

David Virelles is no stranger to the international jazz scene, especially when it comes to Halifax Jazz Festival both as a solo performer and with his band, Continuum.

The Cuban-born pianist was seven years old when he started to study music. "I grew up in a musical household so I was around music since I was born," Virelles says. "Sometimes as a little kid you play just for fun. You hit the keys and the next thing you know, you're taking piano lessons."

For Virelles it was the rhythm, the intensity and the musical chops that drew him into the jazz genre, something that he sees reflected in jazz musicians all over the world. "There is always a high level of musicianship that people try to obtain and there is definitely no shortage of that anywhere," he says. "Here in Canada there are some really great musicians that I am lucky to have had the opportunity to play with."

Virelles is familiar with Canadian hospitality since he has travelled extensively through Canada performing. He'll be wrapping up a workshop in Edmonton before coming to Halifax, and after his local show he's off to New York and Italy to teach a jazz camp. "All over Canada, people are very friendly. That is something that I really like. Everywhere you go, people are very hospitable. Everywhere I've been, people are pretty cool."

Survey Asks

Should council use the yet-to-be-finalized Centre Plan when debating new developments?

  • No, it doesn’t exist yet and is still likely to change
  • Yes, thousands of hours of work and consultation have gone into what’s already assembled
  • Maybe, it really depends on what’s being proposed by the developer
  • I don’t know what the Centre Plan is and do not wish to participate in this poll
