Danko Jones

Sleep is the Enemy

Danko Jones
Sleep is the Enemy
(Bad Taste)
To paraphrase Occam’s Razor, the simplest answer to a problem is most likely to be the right one. Not that Sleep is The Enemy is a problem. It is, however, a straight-ahead no-frills rock record, brimming with testosterone-laden confidence. Even as far back as their indie EPs, Danko Jones’ primary goal was never to reinvent the wheel — all the band wanted was to play fast, loud and hard. The percussive force with which this album hits isn’t unlike Born a Lion (2002) or We Sweat Blood (2003) — Sleep is the Enemy also attempts to capture the raw energy Danko exudes on stage. But there is nothing on this disc that is going to seduce new listeners. This is an album for the established fan. In the case of Danko Jones, Occam got it wrong. More complexity might be a good thing.
