The handsome playboy Xie Yifan, or Fan and the glamorous entrepreneur Mo Jieyu are both 'players' in the upper echelons of Shanghai society in the 1930s. When the pair encounters the beautiful, compassionate and virtuous young widow Du Fenyu (Zhang Ziyi), they make her the object in matching bets involving love and lust.
