Damien Jurado

On My Way to Absence

Damien Jurado
On My Way to Absence
(Secretly Canadian)
Once again, Damien Jurado has released a superb record. It should come as no surprise to those who devour his every breath. On My Way to Absence shares many traits with its predecessor, Where Shall You Take Me?—the intimacy and sparse arrangements of folk-inspired nug-gets nestled comfortably alongside songs that explore broader arrangements; neither is out of place. He is a master at probing painful depths of melancholia and despair, so there are plenty of corners in which damaged souls can take refuge, be they the recently betrayed (“Simple Hello”) or those who just can’t help themselves (“Night Out for the Downer”). Jurado is such a poetic and unique storyteller it is inevitable he will move you in some way.
