Lights Down Low

Lights Down Low
(Turtlemusik)
While never especially groundbreaking, Newfoundland singer (and member of Shaye) Damhnait Doyle’s late ’90s hits at least lacked the painful destruction of pop songs heard on this collection of covers. Doyle has a nice enough voice, but her renditions land firmly in the middle ground between faithful covers and wild diversions (with the occasional accomplished flourish). The artist goes for variety and eclecticism---Joy Division to the Foo Fighters to Bob Marley---yet the songs end up sounding the same. Whether it’s hard rock or reggae, the song gets whittled down to an innocuous lounge-pop sound.
