CPA Atlantic School of Business - Chartered Professional Accountant Program

Graham McGuire I’m a Staff Accountant

I received a math and education degree from Lakehead University and then taught overseas. Subsequently I worked in Ottawa in construction, and in 2012 I moved to Halifax for my wife's employment and family.

When I relocated to Halifax, I worked part-time for the Halifax Regional School Board. Because future job prospects were not secure for supporting a family, I switched careers to work as a hedge fund accountant at Mitsubishi UFJ Fund Services, and the company sponsored and encouraged me to pursue my CPA studies.

Since I didn't take any accounting classes in university, I am currently completing the pre-requisites through a part-time distance education program offered by CPA Atlantic School of Business. The program covers a lot of material in a short period of time, but so far I've been able to maintain an average in the 90s, despite working full-time and having to write my Intermediate/Advanced Financial Accounting exam just two days after the birth of my first child! I'm really looking forward to enrolling in the CPA Professional Education Program this fall.

This month I am starting a new role as a staff accountant at AC Hunter Tellier Belgrave Adamson Chartered Accountants (a member firm of The AC Group). I honestly never saw myself taking this career path, but when the opportunity presented itself I seized it, because I love to learn and it fits well with my analytical background.
