COVID cases and news for Nova Scotia on Friday, Jul 16

🏆 8 active cases 🏆

The zero new cases the province is reporting today is great and all, but that's not the best part of the COVID update. Nova Scotia has 14 people recovering from their COVID infections since yesterday, driving the active caseload down to just eight. Eight active cases. Single-digit cases across the whole province. It's an amazing number to be at, especially considering NS was at 1,531 active cases two months ago.

The last time Nova Scotia had as few as eight active cases was February 14.

“Another day with no new cases is wonderful news,” says premier Iain Rankin in the Friday update. “While we can be proud of our efforts, please do not become complacent. We’ve worked so hard to crush the third wave and get to a point where we are reporting no new cases, let’s keep up the good work. Follow the public health measures and stay safe.”

There are still two Nova Scotians in hospital with COVID, one of them in intensive care. At 2,626 tests completed by NS labs, testing is slightly below the currently daily average of nearly 2,900 tests per day. And with Thursday's vaccinations, fully 48.44 percent of people in Nova Scotia are vaccinated with two doses. The numbers in the government report say the population with at least one dose barely moved from yesterday and is currently at 74.42 percent.

The province reports the number of active cases in each of Nova Scotia's 14 community health networks, but we do the math to be able to report the new and resolved case numbers. We also map the data to provide a different view of the case information.

This interactive graph charts COVID activity in Nova Scotia's third wave, comparing daily new cases with that day’s active caseload. The dark line tracks the rise and fall of new infections reported by the province, which hit a Nova Scotian pandemic record high of 227 cases in a single day on May 7. The green area is the province's caseload, which peaked May 10 at 1,655 active cases. Click or however over any point on the graph and the detail for that moment will pop up. How many Nova Scotians already have one dose of vaccine? How many are fully vaccinated with two doses? And how close are we to the herd immunity goal of 75 percent of the province fully vaxxed?
