Re: “To everyone who rides the 42 Dalhousie bus

Haha! Dal students pay LESS fare than other bus riders. Don't get me wrong, I think the Upass is a great program. But students don't get to reserve friggin' seats at the expense of the general public. The workers (and other city-dwellers) not only pay a higher fare, but they use the bus year-round, AND pay property taxes to fund municipal services. You and your student loan money from Ontario are only here for part of the year, for a few years. Why should you be the important one in the provision of ANY city services?

The folks at SMU better stop riding the 14. That bus belongs to Lieblin Park.

Re: “Diapers: Put this in your clear bag

Definitely a real (and potentially embarrassing) problem with the clear garbage bag policy. I'm not against good waste management and garbage policies, but ours does make it tough for situations like yours.

Cat litter is not as major a problem, but certainly inconvenient. I scoop into reclaimed grocery bags, then have to save them all up for two weeks and then put them all into a single black bag that gets way too heavy. I could use multiple clear bags, to split up the weight, but then I'm not allowed to use the grocery bags but would need to leave the litter loose. It gets gross no matter how good a routine you work out.

Diaper users (of any ages) have my sincerest sympathies!

Re: “Blame Halifax Transit for low bus ridership

There has been a lot of new development growth on the Spryfield-Sambro loop (that Purcell's Cove is a part of). And transit on the loop is so poorly organized. The 14 and 20 always came too close together, in the areas where they overlap. Then you're waiting 30 or 60 minutes for the next pair of buses headed in town.

The far more aggravating issue, though, is the bizarre fetish for running all of our busses to Mumford. We are SO close to Bayer's Lake, but we have to go through the rotary and onto the penninsula. And take 2 or 3 buses to spend an hour or more getting to Bayer's Lake. It's only a 5 minute drive by car!!!

There should be one bus doing the loop, one doing express from the Spryfield mall to Mumford, and one that somehow includes Cowie Hill and goes out the Dunbrack to Bayer's Lake.

The same problem existed when I lived in Bedford. You can drive from the Bedford mall to Dartmouth (Burnside) quickly via Dartmouth Road. But Metro Transit could never imagine a world anyone would be going anywhere but downtown Halifax. A 5 minute car drive became a 2 or 3 hour bus trek. Had to take the 80 all the way in to Scotia Square, then cross the bridge on a different bus, THEN get a Dartmouth bus. It was such a joke.

Our transit planners seemed to make the penninsula a mandatory destination. With overlapping buses all needing to go through the same shitty traffic choke points. (Bayer's Rd, Spring Garden, Barrington, etc.)

Re: “Stand up for Woodside

I second the Mumford terminal suggestion! They need a few benches lining the walls for those who cannot stand for long periods of time, especially when it's cold or raining.

It's a shame that that shit-smearing pyromaniacs continually try to destroy the terminal and everything in it. I suspect that, and absence of security, contributes to the lack of basic infrastructure at the terminal. It was shocking to see the Sackville terminal in comparison-- much nicer digs! (Clean washroom, reasonably priced drink and snack machines, etc...)

Re: “Question: Is Premier-elect Dexter cool?

Having met Premier(!) Dexter many times, I feel sufficiently well-informed to say that he is indeed "Nova Scotia cool". Always warm and approachable; never giving the impression of a slick, over-eager, glad-handing politician. He's a man who visibly enjoys relating to people and their ideas, and is refreshingly unpretentious in doing so. (Also, I've seen him wearing blue jeans. Not high-waisted. Much cooler than Obama's.)

Re: “Crossing the law

Ugh... You're fucking kidding me! More of these stupid things? When I moved to Bedford, I was suprised by how walkable I generally found it, with one exception--

There are a few intersections on the Bedford Highway with these push-button crosswalk lights already. And maybe once out of every 5 times I use them, they actually give me permission to walk.

When traffic flow down the highway makes crossing opportunities rare, it sucks to press a "walk" button and watch the lights change for cars but not pedestrians. Because the next change in the lights won't be for another five minutes, and god knows if the button will "take" this time either.

So I guess my usual practice of walking without the White Man's permission when this happens will now be against the law???
