Civilization V

Available on Windows, Mac OSX (2K Games)

Sid Meier’s long- running turn-based strategy franchise has been a staple of PC gaming for years, but does the latest version offer enough to warrant an upgrade? Yes and no. If you’ve been playing Civilization for some time, you’ll appreciate the improved visuals and fluid interface, but the difficulty and “hardcoreness” of the gameplay is lightened. If you’re new to Civilization, this is a great entry point. You pick from over a dozen empires from Arabia to Siam (even more with an expansion pack). Starting from meagre beginnings in the ancient world you try to survive and develop a modern society. Using resources, soldiers, diplomacy and more, you don’t have to clobber your enemies to win. Your allies may suddenly betray you, or two typically dormant nations will suddenly be at each other’s throats. This game is great for mysteriously erasing vast amounts of time.
