Chester Playhouse Summer Theatre Festival: Village Wooing

Sparking chemistry puts actors Kristin Howell and Marty Burt's latest at the top of the must-see summer theatre list.

In Village Wooing, Kristin Howell plays a quick-witted, strong-willed force of nature who sets her sights on an eligible widower played by Marty Burt. Howell, a classic, porcelain-skinned "English" beauty, is perfectly cast. Her delivery of Shaw's charming, cheeky words is spot-on. Burt does a fine job of playing the self-contained gentleman who is drawn at first unwillingly, but eventually gleefully, into life and love. Together, they share oodles of chemistry. This is a short play, but packed with lots of Shaw's trademark social commentary and wit. The costume design by Denise Barrett and the uncredited set design are stunning, capturing the essence of the era with a few simple strokes. In a season that's been filled with plenty of remarkable theatre, Village Wooing stands out as truly delightful summer fare.
