Caught

By Lisa Moore (House of Anansi)

“The law was a folktale that’s changed every time it was told.” How do you follow up a novel like February? Well, if you’re Lisa Moore–coming off a Canada Reads win–you might want to challenge yourself. And what better way to do so than to take a genre typically unassociated with literary merit, and pump your talents into it. Caught is a compelling summer read, but offers far more than your typical beach-bag fare. Following a trans-Canada jailbreak through the eyes of a handsome, 21-year-old drug-dealing protagonist, Caught is nothing less than a literary thriller. Reconsidering the–often mutually exclusive–genres of Canadian crime fiction and literary fiction, Moore writes a story that is distinctively Canadian without buoying itself on easy cliches. Gripping, fast-paced and exquisitely written, Caught is not the “next February,” but it’s perfect for August.
