For the past three years, Eastern Front Theatre has put on some sort of tribute show (Singalong Jubilee, Stan Rogers – a Matter of Heart and this year’s Songbird – a Musical Tribute to Anne Murray) as their winter theatre offering. It’s obviously an effective way to get bums in seats, as these shows seem to draw larger-than-usual crowds, but they really aren’t my cup of tea. I like some drama with my theatre, and these endless stringing together of popular songs lack that. And if I’m going to a concert, I want to see the original artist. That being said, the three women (Leora Joy Godden, Marlene Handrahan, Margot Sampson) who in the Anne Murray show are terrific singers who exude the kind of warmth that makes them a pleasure to watch. The projections are pretty, the costume changes are frequent but two hours of easy listening is about an hour and three quarters too much for me. ---Kate Watson
