Calling Dr. Laura: A Graphic Memoir

Nicole J. Georges (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)

Nicole is your average Portland hipster, chugging along, happily raising chickens and hosting karaoke nights at the local dive bar. But when a palm reader reveals a long-buried family secret (Nicole’s mom lied about the identity of her father), Nicole has to re-examine her childhood in light of the news. As Nicole tries to track down her real dad, it becomes more and more apparent that it’s her mercurial mother who is the real mystery. As Nicole tries to disentangle their relationship, it digs up painful (and some happy) memories of her childhood. Calling Dr. Laura is an interesting graphic novel about how we try to reinvent ourselves as adults without addressing the things in our past that have made us the way we are. Georges’ art is cute and heartfelt, moving between simple for the childhood scenes and more detailed for the present.
