Calendar Girls

A runaway hit

The Bedford Players production of Calendar Girls (and the calendar that they’ve made to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada) shows how to put the “fun” in “fundraising”. It’s a fast-paced play (at least for the better-written, more engaging first half) that’s beautifully directed by Clair Henderson. The show-stopping nude photography scene is a wonder of choreography, delightfully naughty and cheeky without over-exposing any of the actors. There’s no weak link in this large cast, but Claire Jardine as the rough-and-tumble Cora and Matthew Goodmanson as the shy photographer particularly stood out for me. While there is plenty of humour in the play, it also deals with loss and grief, making it more emotionally satisfying than a straight-up comedy. Good luck getting tickets, though, as this is a runaway hit for Bedford Players.
