Dartmouth Players has picked a real winner with Cabaret. Apparently tickets are selling like mad, and with good reason. They’ve delivered a lot with this production: the set is cleverly constructed to fit the small stage, the chorus costumes are sexy and sassy and the calibre of acting and singing is very high. Russell Storer does a superb turn as the oily, impish Emcee, Shannon Kelly is spot-on as the brash and voluptuous singer Sally Bowles and Calum MacLean is winning as the would-be writer Cliff Bradshaw. But it’s Valerie MacKenzie and Tony Marshall who bring real heart to this story in the roles of the elderly star-crossed lovers. Their duet “Married” is beautiful and heartbreaking. What’s not to like about a show that delivers sex-appeal and soul? –Kate Watson
