Buy art and change the world

FRED (2606 Agricola) is the place to be if you love art and that king-of-the-world feeling you get from contributing to a good cause. On Thursday, November 27, there’s Leave Out Violence’s annual art auction, where you can bid on work by Cliff Eyland, Sherry Lynn Jollymore, Kevin Lewis and many others. Tickets are a suggested donation of $20, the silent auction begins at 6pm, the live one at 8pm. Proceeds help five youth from the LOVE program on their trip to Poland with Coalition for Kids International, where they’ll be helping fulfill the dreams of terminally ill, underprivileged or neglected children.

Then head back to FRED on December 4 for Adsum’s Mystery Art sale and cocktail party (6-9pm, $20), where art from a bunch of different types will be on sale for $100 each. But here’s the catch: the pieces are signed on the back so you won’t know whether you have a painting in your hand by Holly Carr or Joseph Purcell. Is that a Rick Mercer original or did Phyllis Diller paint that? Whoa…back up, yes there are two pieces and two signed photos by Phyllis “When I go to the beauty parlor, I always use the emergency entrance. Sometimes I just go for an estimate” Diller! All proceeds go to Adsum, who are marking the 25th anniversary of their youth, women and children’s shelter on Brunswick Street.
