I have to agree with Tim Bousquet’s opinion that widening Bayers Road is not a solution to the traffic problem, but something needs to change there (“Bayers Road widening,” Reality Bites, Jan. 29). I own a house in Timberlea, and have rented it out and moved back into the city because the commute is unbearable while my girlfriend is trying to get to Dalhousie every day.
The partial solution to Bayers Road is to remove the divider and have a reversible transit lane. (I don’t even want to think about where all the Bayers Road traffic will get re-directed during a renovation project.) But this is a Band-Aid fix.
The long-term solution is to reduce the number of vehicles needing to get into Halifax. Timberlea, Tantallon and Hammonds Plains need bus terminals and Park & Ride lots with Link buses that run more than once an hour and don’t take an hour and a half to get into the city. I’d love to use public transit if it was at all efficient outside HRM.
Regarding comments about driving alone in SUVs from suburbs: I agree, but what’s the excuse for people doing the same thing who live inside Halifax who are within walking distance of buses that run every 15 minutes?
