Bruce Hornsby

Halcyon Days

Bruce Hornsby
Halcyon Days
(Columbia)
There was a time when a few tunes on Halcyon Days would have ruled the radio. Hornsby plays chameleon, oozing with aroma of Moby, Randy Newman and Little Feat. He frames cameos by Elton John, Sting and Eric Clapton in his strongest tunes. “Dreamland,” written for one of Hornsby’s sons, works both as peptalk and lullabye. A few songs are bailed out by his fluent, fluid piano. Such virtuosity is what saves soft rock from teetering into New Age, should anyone still be listening.
