Broken Embraces

Directed by Pedro Almodovar (Sony)

Broken Embraces is more subtle and less flamboyant than most of Almodovar's recent films. Compared to the cinematic theatrics of Bad Education and Talk to Her, Broken Embraces is a far quieter experience. But it gets under your skin, as Almodovar tends to do, and creeps with a chill that leaves you disturbed and unsure by end. Harry Caine (Lluis Homar) is a blind screenwriter whose past is revealed when the son of an ex-lover's dead husband propositions him to write a screenplay. The film tells the tale of Caine's romance with Lena (Penelope Cruz) and the jealously and passion that surrounded them. Almodovar's use of colour and framing is as magnificent as ever and despite missing his usual exuberance, sticks with you long after the film fades out.
