Conor Oberst is never going to stop those Voice of a Generation proclamations if he keeps pulling stunts like this. The first of two simultaneously released albums, I’m Wide Awake finds the same folky sad boy displayed so beautifully on 2002’s Lifted. Since leaving Omaha for NYC, he’s still drinking, getting his heart broken and living to hang out, but there’s a new confidence here. Like Oberst himself, it’s all very pretty, but it feels guilty about that.
