Brett Ryan

Salvation Radio (independent)

A local rock contrarian for 20 years, Brett Ryan (see listings pg 25) is back and belting after a house fire. The disc is attractively packaged and has ace session work, especially the saxophones of Chris Mitchell and Kenny McKay. The songs all seem to aspire to be the best record Van Morrison never made, so the arrangements can feel like an overly manicured lawn. “Glorious Sound” takes barely half a minute to evoke both CCR’s “Fortunate Son” and Neil Diamond’s “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show,” then carves its own uplifting path. Recorded mostly in Nashville, Salvation Radio is polished and enjoyable, even if it could be messier.
