Breakfast at Jane’s

Eatery opens early, starting this Thursday

jane’s on the common (2394 Robie Street, 431-5683), destination for great dinners, lunches and weekend brunches, will now be open for breakfast Tuesday through Friday from 7:30am to 11am. “It is my favourite meal,” says proprietor Jane Wright, who says when she first opened her popular restaurant they were open for breakfast, but space in the kitchen became a problem. “Our kitchen here is like working on a submarine,” she says. “But we’re just feeling like were ready and a lot more organized than we used to be.” Expect for breakfast many of the jane’s brunch menu standards standards plus old-fashioned oatmeal porridge, a fruit plate, tofu and brown rice with eggs and a new breakfast sandwich.

And speaking of jane’s news, Wright has been working on a space at 2053 Gottingen Street at the corner of Portland Place, across from the Paragon, in the former location of Cooke Sales. “We’ve just been renovating what were calling a commissary kitchen, on the bottom lower level,” she says. The kitchen below will be making the casseroles and sandwiches for the take-out side of Wright's resto, jane’s next door. “And we’re also hoping to get into catering in away that we’ve never been able to. We just haven’t had the space to take it on.” Right now she says the upper level may be used for art exhibits but she's holding off on revealing any more plans for that space.

Wright says her research on 2053 Gottingen revealed from 1945 to 1965 it was a European chapeau retailer. “Can you imagine Halifax having an economy that could sustain a Paris hat shop for 20 years?”
