Some of Halifax's best pop-punk and hardcore punk bands will be featured on Stupid Brain, a compilation tape (soon-to-be vinyl) put together by The Fat Stupids' Craig Hamlin and Matt Grace.

Moncton's Fear of Lipstick, Halifax's Tongan Death Grip, Dead Red, The Dean Molenkos, Vixens, The Donairs, Outtacontroller and Dartmouth's The Scoopouts are just a few of the 16 bands contributing previously unreleased material. The release show on Friday at Gus' Pub will also feature a tape release by local grit-punkers Dyscontrol, a double-tape double-whammy showing off east coast punk.

"I decided to put out another comp after realizing how great punk recordings have become," says Hamlin, who's been around the Halifax scene for about 10 years. "I couldn't have imagined putting out something that was so consistently good before. It's really solid. You don't get a chance to delve into scenes all over the world but if we put this out there, then people will get a sense of punk in eastern Canada. It's representative. That's the main goal."

Hamlin admits there are a few bands missing from the comp, mainly from the more hardcore camps, but there are still a few hardcore tracks mixed in. "Word on the Street and Vixens are pretty hardcore," he says, "but because we're not in, like, New York City where it really thrives, hardcore bands share the bill with punk bands all the time here. I think that's a unique quality of our scene, and I'm pretty stoked on the comp. It's such an interesting mix of punk and pop-punk bands and it sounds really good."

Mastered by Dave Williams, who also worked on the newest Mean Jeans record, with a tape liner designed by Andrew Neville and the careful craftiness of Hamlin and Grace (who are both members in at least six other local punk bands), Stupid Brain is a comp that speaks of a really strong community.

"I was really proud of our scene when I heard it," says Hamlin. This is a tape you'll be rewinding.
