Everyone likes Bob Harvey. How could you not? A gentleman, kind even in defeat, an old-style statesman if there ever was one.

But Harvey could use the respect and status he’s earned over the years to better advantage.

For example, he personally understands the value of amalgamation to his district. “It’s the best thing that ever happened to Sackville,” he told me last year---but hasn’t used that understanding to try to quiet the wars between the urban core and the suburbs.

Harvey has political capital to spend, but seems to rest on his laurels. He’s uninterested in challenging accepted wisdom, and has become somewhat quieter during council meetings. Sometimes Harvey seems completely indifferent to politics altogether---he was in opposition to the Chebucto Road widening, but blew an opportunity to sidetrack that project by voting the wrong way on a procedural vote. “Funny how that happens,” he said, shrugging off the vote.

We need more engagement from Sackville, Bob.
