Boardwalk Empire

Season premiere (Sundays on HBO)

Entourage’s seventh season finale should have concluded with the death of Sasha Gray’s acting career, but sadly her one-tone run on the overextended comedy means she’ll probably get offered Megan Fox’s leftovers. At least HBO is atoning for its sins by running the Prohibition-era drama Boardwalk Empire in Entourage’s old timeslot. Here’s another set of HBO-formula bad boys, but at least this time there’s real talent (Steve Bushemi, Michael Pitt, Kelly MacDonald) supported by the cable network’s seemingly bottomless budget: The boardwalk glows warmly with nightclub signs, feathers, garters and the glint of hidden flasks. Visually, it looks perfect, in the way that Mad Men “looks” perfect, no details ignored. The pilot is directed by executive producer Martin Scorsese, which only adds to the sense of grandiosity, but it’s still too early to tell if Boardwalk Empire actually has a heart.
