The play is fun and witty, the actors are lovely to watch (and listen to), but it is the set and costumes that stand out most in Neptune’s production of Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit. It’s the story of a self-satisfied author (Ivan Sherry) and his genteel second wife (Martha Irving) who have the frailties of their marriage exposed when the first wife (Maria McLean) is conjured from beyond the grave by a madcap mystic (Margot Dionne in a hilariously physical performance). With the costumes, designer Patrick Clark manages to conjure up a time and place where “cocktails” were an all-day event and “tea” was a meal. The fabrics and designs are breathtaking. The same can be said for Geofry Dinwiddie’s opulent and clever set. You’ll be holding your breath at the end of this ghostly comedy, hoping that no damage is really done as havoc is wreaked upon the Dinwiddie’s work. (KW)
