"Overall, it's about meeting people," says Kate Cameron, owner of the newly opened Bliss Breakfast Cafe on Novalea Drive. "It's about creating a place where people feel welcome." In collaboration with Caribbean Bliss (3619 Novalea Drive), Cameron shares a kitchen and dining space with owner Elias Fathallah.

The new cafe's menu has several signature items—breakfast sandwiches, burritos and banana crepes—alongside a rotating selection of baked goods and smoothies. The breakfast sandwich is served with cherry tomato balsamic butter reduction and maple bacon, a flavour-filled alternative to most fast-food morning options.

While Cameron hopes people feel comfortable ordering their breakfasts to-go, she also welcomes them to linger in the tucked away space, which provides free street parking and seating for up to 20. Under the umbrella of Caribbean Bliss, Bliss Breakfast is open from 8am to 1pm on weekdays, while the restaurant serves its authentic dishes from 12pm to 8pm. With the two crossing over every noon hour, guests have a small window of opportunity to decide if they want a smoothie with their jerk chicken lunch. Call it brunch!

Cameron has a professional background in marketing and small business but she says she owes her interest in cooking and baking to her Italian grandmother. She remembers waking up early each morning as a child to find her grandmother already at work prepping meals for the family.

"Because of her, it's always something that came naturally to me," Cameron says. "She was never happier than when she had a house full of people eating her food. Food is what draws people together, and what happens when they're together is magical." You can follow Cameron's magic at @bliss.breakfast.cafe.
