Black Francis

Black Francis
Cooking vinyl
Chris Thompson has decided to resurrect his Black Francis alter-ego, but anyone expecting BlueFinger to be a full-on throat-wrecking return to Pixies-era spit and fury will be disappointed---most of the material stays within the singer-songwriter territory Thompson’s carved out over the last decade. He starts off right, though, with “Captain Pasty” and “Threshold Apprehension,” both tight and urgent, only to lay back into comfy Catholics territory for the rest of the disc. Hearing those first two songs, along with “You Can’t Break a Heart and Have It” and the equally punky and inspired “Tight Black Rubber” will make you wish he played like that all the time
