Hats off to Neptune Theatre for bringing Rick Miller and Daniel Brooks’ challenging and highly entertaining Bigger Than Jesus to Halifax. This is art with the potential to offend, but it is rooted in such theological substance and asks such thought-provoking questions that only the staunchly closed-minded will go away angry. Miller is brilliant in this one-man show. He introduces himself as a lapsed Catholic, and proceeds to take the audience on a wild ride through the life of Jesus. Along the way he portrays a New York Jew, an evangelical preacher and even Jesus as a flight attendant. He cleverly plays with words. He draws parallels between the present-day Fab Four (John, Paul George and Ringo) and the Biblical Fab Four (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). He recreates the last supper as a kind of puppet show. This is clever stuff, masterfully produced. This is theatre that pushes the envelope. –Kate Watson
