A werewolf stalks a snowy mountain village in Catherine Hardwicke’s fairy tale adaptation, but its victim count doesn’t compare to that of the film itself. None of the people involved in making this movie are spared embarrassment. Not Amanda Seyfried as Valerie, whose connection to the wolf further complicates a love triangle that includes her unwanted fiance and the man towards whom her bosom truly heaves. Not Gary Oldman, playing a priest whose scorched-earth policy of werewolf hunting turns the townspeople against each other. Not poor Julie Christie as Valerie’s grandmother and wolf suspect. And certainly not director Hardwicke (Twilight), swimming in familiar monster-romance waters yet failing to produce a coherent plot, compelling action or a single credible character. Yes, it’s fantasy. It’s also a total mess.
