Best Thing To Happen In Halifax In The Past Year

Gold Winner Argyle Street

Silver Winner Removal of Cornwallis Statue

Bronze Winner The Agave Plant

The removal of Edward Cornwallis’ statue from the south end park that still bears his name was a momentous day for a town still grappling with reconciliation and its colonial history. Sure, technically Edward and his legacy of imperialism, broken treaties and scalping proclamations still rests in a bunker over in Burnside and potentially could be erected once more, pending the recommendation of a panel of experts. But it will never be forgotten that in 2018 the residents of Halifax spoke up loud enough and long enough for the statue to finally be toppled. Also—and apparently more importantly—drinking on Argyle Street is more fun now.
