When The Canteen moved from its little sandwich counter on Ochterloney to a sunny, sit-down family restaurant on Portland in 2017, people were pumped. But something was missing. “It was one of those situations, we weren’t delivering on the takeout side of thing when we first opened,” says co-owner Doug Townsend of what propelled the creation of The Little C, a sidekick spot next door where folks could get the grab-and-go lunches—read: that gold-winning roster of big-ass sandwiches— they’d come to love at the original location. “It wasn’t ever part of our master plan,” says Renée Lavallée of The Little C move, which made her adoring fans very very happy. “It was out of the reality that people wanted the old Canteen, they wanted something fast.”
