Hydrostone

One of Halifax’s prettiest districts, the Hydrostone has its roots in Halifax’s greatest tragedy. Following the Halifax Explosion of 1917, the area around Fort Needham in the city’s north end had to be completely rebuilt. Completed in 1920, the Hydrostone area was one of Halifax’s first and most successful experiments in modern urban planning. Eighty-five years on, the neighbourhood not only boasts a unique architectural look but a thriving market district. And the name? It's the trademark of the stone used in the construction of the houses.

Runner-up: South end
