And the Shiny Red Apple™ Award goes to Ursula Kelly. To what does she attribute her success with students? “I think they like my dog,” says Kelly, an associate professor in the department of education at Mount Saint Vincent University. She laughs and then explains her golden retriever Julie has been known to walk around campus with her. Kelly has also taught at Saint Mary’s University, from 1988 until 1994, but relocated when smu’s department of education was transferred to the Mount. Kelly’s no stranger to moving around; she’s a native of Newfoundland but moved west to obtain her PhD at the University of Toronto. Since moving to Halifax, she’s been at the head of the class teaching soon-to-be-teachers the finer points of English, pop culture and feminist theory. —Tara Wittchen
