Gold Winner Salvatore’s Pizzaiolo Trattoria
Silver Winner Mother’s Pizza
Bronze Winner Morris East, Halifax
Fifteen years in a row Salvatore’s has won the Best Pizza Pie gold, and still “we never stop trying to improve,” says Sal’s Chris Cuddihy. Relax, Halifax. He’s not talking about tweaking the dough or messing with the sauce—which is never going to change from the recipe the late Salvatore Rinaldo got from his Sicilian grandmother. But the business, owned by Cuddihy and his partner/Sal’s dessert chef Michelle Rouleau, is fair game. They finished a major expansion in early 2015, taking over the space next door, adding a real dining room, doubling the number of staff and nearly tripling the size of the pizza oven to be able to serve 400 pies on a busy day. The change has been great for the business, which marked its 21st anniversary the day before the Best of Halifax results came out. Cuddihy says, “since the expansion, it’s been fun.”
