In January 2018, when Kate Pepler announced to the world that The Tare Shop—a package-free bulk store—was on its way, she felt like she was the only person in the city trying to live that way. “Then I started getting messages from all these people who were also trying to,” she says. The community connection to the shop (which includes celeb fans Adrian Grenier and Iliza Shlesinger) was near immediate, and within a year Pepler’s bulk selection has grown from 40ish items to over 200. “We are in a time of crisis. We have the ability, we’re fortunate to have a place like this and fortunate to have options where we live,” says Pepler of her inspiration. “Why not now? Why not come in with your empty laundry container and fill that up instead of buying a new one?”
