Halifax’s hero in the half shell is a mere 97 years old, and our city’s premiere vegan influencer is still just as cute as the day he hatched. How many times over the 76 years Gus has been in Halifax have you gazed upon the handsome gopher tortoise in his plexiglass encasement at the Museum of Natural History, waiting to see him meander around, maybe nibble a piece of lettuce, or—jackpot, baby—look right into your eyes and blink slowly? Gus’ eyes are nothing like the sun, and yet, by heaven, I think our love as rare as any he belied with false compare.
