Gold Winner The Town Heroes
Silver Winner Gloryhound
Bronze Winner Three Sheet
Chatting over lunchtime plates of mac and cheese (real, not the fake stuff), The Town Heroes, Mike Ryan and Bruce Gillis, seem like possibly the most unassuming, self-deprecating band in existence. For the past two years, The Cape Breton duo has transcended its cover-band roots by crafting hooky, classic indie-rock songs with a huge sound that belies its minimalistic set-up. “We don’t get yelled at,” says Gillis. “That’s successful I guess.” Not getting yelled at is a low bar to set, but one the Heroes have leapt over with frightening ease, due to talent, of course, but also because of their punishing work ethic. A Music Nova Scotia showcase in Germany, two Nova Scotia Music Week nominations, playing the ECMAs, Halifax Pop Explosion, Evolve and more have made this a memorable year for the band. Last year they won your vote for best new band, this year they’ve moved into the coveted best band slot. Next stop, Hollywood?
