Joel Plaskett Emergency, Truthfully, Truthfully

The Joel Plaskett Emergency did what any band does if it has released an amazing record—they hit the road. But the Emergency found the workload more intense than ever with their increased popularity: The trek back to Halifax from across Canada found Plaskett and drummer Dave Marsh sick as dogs. “We went into a restaurant in Quebec and we were both so sick that I was literally, falling asleep at the table,” Plaskett says. “I think we probably looked like junkies because we weren’t talking, passed out in front of our chicken noodle soup.” The hard work paid off this year with an invitation to join influential label Maple Music, a Juno nod for Truthfully, Truthfully and a win for best local album in The Coast. Of course, living in Halifax helps. “I’d like to think it’s based on the quality of the record,” Plaskett says. “I’m sure that’s part of it, though I’ve lived here almost my entire life. I friggin’ know everybody.”

Runner-up: Wintersleep, S/T
